Our evaluation process was built with the collector and investor in mind. We are not a marketplace for random lots or estate sale leftovers. We are curators. That means before anything ever appears on this site, it has passed through a rigorous, multi-layered evaluation designed to separate the truly exceptional from the merely interesting. We do not cut corners, because your trust—and your investment—depends on it.

The Five Pillars of Collectible Evaluation
Every piece we consider is measured against five core criteria. These are not items we check off once. They are examined in relation to one another because a rare card in poor condition is different from a rare card in pristine condition, and a compelling story without provenance is just a story. - Authenticity: Is the item real, unaltered, and genuine?
- Condition: What is its physical state, and how does it compare to preservation standards?
- Rarity: How scarce is this specific item in the market?
- Provenance: Does it have a verifiable history that adds context and trust?
- Market Demand: Is there a real, sustainable market for this item today and tomorrow?
When these five pillars align, we have a piece worth presenting. When one is weak or missing, we pass.
Step 1: Authentication & Verification
Before we even consider grade or price, we must know the item is real. Counterfeits and altered collectibles are a persistent problem in every category from coins to cards to comics. Our first step is a thorough authentication process that combines expert review, reference materials, and occasionally, third-party verification.
We check for inconsistencies in fonts, colors, edges, and materials. For trading cards, we verify holograms, factory markings, and centering patterns specific to each print run. For coins, we weigh and measure against mint specifications. For signed items, we compare handwriting against known exemplars and, when necessary, consult authenticators who specialize in that specific person’s signature.
We also use up-to-date databases and serial number lookups where applicable. If something does not feel right, we do not force it. We walk away. Authenticity is non-negotiable.
Step 2: Professional Grading & Condition Assessment
After authentication, we move to condition. This is where we rely on established third-party grading services—PSA and SGC for cards, CGC and CBCS for comics, NGC and PCGS for coins—whenever possible. A slab from a trusted grader adds a layer of objectivity that a photo alone cannot provide.
If an item is raw (ungraded), we still assess it using the same professional standards. We examine surfaces for scratches, dents, and discoloration. Corners are checked for wear. Edges are inspected for chipping. Centering is measured against the industry scale. We do not inflate a grade because we wish it were better. We report exactly what we see.
Our listings always include the exact grade and a clear description of any notable flaws. If we have questions about the condition, we send it to a grading service ourselves before listing it. That is our standard.
Step 3: Rarity & Scarcity Analysis
Rarity can come from many angles: low print runs, limited editions, production errors, or simply age and survival rate. A card from a short-lived set in the 1880s is rare because so few were printed and fewer still survive. A modern parallel numbered to five is rare because only five exist.
We use census data from grading services and auction archives to understand how many examples of a given item exist in comparable condition. We look at population reports for cards and coins. For comics, we check certified numbers for high-grade copies. This data is not theoretical—it comes from years of sold records and verified submissions.
If an item is one of thousands in top condition, it may still be investable, but it is not rare. Conversely, if only a handful exist in any condition, that scarcity demands attention.
Step 4: Provenance & Story
A collectible with a documented past carries more weight than one that simply appears in the wild. Provenance is not about sentimental storytelling; it is about a verifiable chain of custody that confirms authenticity and often enhances significance.
We look for receipts, letters of authenticity from previous sales, museum or exhibition records, and any documentation linking the item to a notable owner or event. For example, a baseball signed by Babe Ruth is one thing. A baseball signed by Babe Ruth with photos of the signing and a letter from the person present is much more credible and valuable.
We share what we know about an item’s history directly in the listing. If the story is compelling but unverifiable, we do not dress it up. We present what is proven and leave the rest aside.
Step 5: Market Research & Investment Potential
The final pillar brings everything together with real-world data. We research recent auction results from major houses like Heritage Auctions, Sotheby’s, and Goldin. We review sold listings on secondary markets. We study price guides, but we rely more heavily on actual transaction data because theory and reality do not always match.
We also pay attention to trends. Is a particular player, set, or category gaining momentum? Is demand driven by genuine collector interest, short-term hype, or something else? We want items that have a steady or growing collector base, not those riding a temporary wave.
Pricing at Collect-Us.com is set based on what we observe in the market, not on aspiration. If comparable sales are limited, we price cautiously. We would rather price fairly and sell to a happy collector than overreach and sit on inventory.
Our Commitment to Transparency
Every detail we uncover during our evaluation goes into the listing. You will see grading certification numbers, condition notes (both strengths and weaknesses), provenance details, and market context. We do not hide flaws or obscure information to make a sale.
If we commissioned a third-party grade, we say so. If we personally authenticated an item, we explain how. If the condition has subtle wear that might not show in photos, we write it out. We want you to feel as informed as if you had examined the item yourself.
